Hollon Safes

We have just started carrying the Hollon Safes on our site. I’ve known about them for a long time however, they have always been a little more expensive than similar brands like Cobalt Safe or Gardall Safes. That is until recently. In the spring both companies had a huge 30% increase in wholesale prices. Well, that made the Hollon Safes a much better deal.

Quality of Hollon Safes has always been a little better than similar type safes made from other manufacturers. They have a tendency to put in more bolts in their safes. Take for instance the Cobalt SB-02c it has 3 bolts on the door opening side and 3 fixed bolts on the hinge side. (Gardall model FB-2013 is the same as the SB-02c) However, when you open the Hollon Safe HS-685 you see three bolts on the door opening side, 1 bolt going into the top, and another going into the bottom. PLUS a 1 inch thick locking bar that goes from top to bottom. That is the thickest hinge side locking bar in the industry that I am aware of.

Safes Lock: Notice that Hollon Safe is equiping ALL thier safes with a Group 1 Electronic lock. They have moved away from lesser secure Group II dials that other manufacturers are using. The CE Digital lock comes with “LockOut” technology that has a time delay feature and is activated if the wrong number is entered more than 3 times. The lock will reset after 10 minutes for correct code entry. Did I mention is was a High security Group I lock? This is much more secure than a dial as dial can have a “Safe Dialer” machine hooked to it and automactically dial open the safe within hours! This keypad also has an 8-bit micro processor chip with NON-Volitale memory. It maintains customer code even without batteries. Your secret code can program with 4-16 digits. (more code options) Its also free to change the code on when ever you want. Unlike dials that require a locksmith to change the combination. Cost is around $75 each time you want to change the code. Many people ask me if a dial will outlast a keypad in a fire. Both the dial and the keypad is ruined after a fire. Keypads are also not suseptable to “drifting” like a dial will. (Drifting is when a dials code gets changed through use. The code maybe 25-50-75 and then it shifts and becomes 26-50-75. But the dial doesn’t tell it shifted. You just can’t get into the safe one day)

Popular brands of Dials are Sargent & Greenleaf or LaGard. Both established themselves as leaders in the field and were considered long lasting and made in Kentucky. However, both companies have since been sold and both companies now make thier locks in the “eastern part” of the USA known as China. I have found these Chinese dials to not be up to the original manufacture quality. These locks have a nasty reputation for drift and wearing out due assembly quality and parts. However, if you speak with your local locksmith he may not be aware of the changes and he may state that “These dials will last forever”. (Do you know of anything mechanical that lasts forever? Me either.)

To wrap things up Hollon Safes are really offering a superior quality safe and has done more to protect their customers than most competitive safes. Check out their 2 Hour Fire & Burglary Safes.

With an increasing crime rate, the importance of protecting your valuables has become significant. To prevent burglary and protect your valuables, buying a safe is essential. Safes are available in different sizes and come with a varied degree of security.

Selection of the right security safe may seem tedious but is an important process. A safe must be chosen depending on the contents that require security. Following are some of the categories of safes available:

Fire resistant safes

Fire safes are useful in protecting your important documents during a fire. They can withstand very high temperatures and are available in different shapes and sizes.

Deposit safes

These security safes are also known as cash rating safes. The cash ratings of such safes depends on the amount of cash they hold and provide an indication of their security features such as wall thickness, materials used and other such factors.

Laptop safes

These safes provide theft and fire protection for your laptops. They offer effective security at an affordable cost and can be used at home or at the workplace.

All security safes are available in a range of electronic and manual key locking. These safes can be installed under floors or into walls and the right business or home safe can fulfil all your needs.

Your important business or personal valuables are secure in a safe. Different security safes are available online that provide protection to your irreplaceable items and offer you peace of mind.

Hmmm, good question right? You will often find that Home Safes are in two catagories. Factory Rated 1 hour fireproof home safes or UL listed 1 hour fireproof home safes. Factory rated means that the factory has designed the safe for what they think it would take to pass a UL test or had a less reputable testing facility test the safe.

The guys at Underwriters Labratory are the most abusive on a product. I have seen some factory rated products pass at half the “factory rated time!” Such as a 2 hour rated safe lasting for only 1 hour.

I have also seen some companies that make a fireproof home safe sent to UL for testing then get passed at 1 hour. The design gets sent off to an ultra cheap overseas manufacture facility that cuts corners and doesn’t produce the safe properly so it would never pass the UL test again. I often find these in the big box retailers. I challange them to take one off the shelf and get it retested and see if it passes.

Always get the advise of an expert. Start with your local locksmith and work your way out from there. Remember, even my opinion is just that…an opinion.

Lets start by looking at the fireproof material used on the MS-5922 gun safe. The use of a sheetrock fireboard material and the U.L. approved heat activated door seal provide enough protection to protect from fires. The Mutual Gun Safe is lab tested in a oven chamber at 1760 degrees degrees Fahrenheit for 60 minutes. While staying at or below 350 internal. Lots of people ask me “Why 350 degrees?” because just above that tempature paper starts to char and can flash fire at 400 degrees. So this is very good protection from a house fire.

The Mutual Gun Safe is also equipped with a full arsenal of anti-burglary features.

1.The locking bolts are a massive one inch in diameter.

2.There are at least three dead bolts facing the hinge side, one active bolt at the top, and at least five active bolts along the closing side.

3. The lock is protected from punch-out attempts by a Manganese (HRC 60 hardness) hardplate.

4. The LaGard Dial Lock is a Group II lock and has a spring-loaded relocker. (LaGard is an American lock maker, excellant reputation)

5. There are two bolt-down holes predrilled at the bottom of the safe that accommodate standard 1/2″ bolts to keep the safe where it is meant to stay.

5. 10 Gauge steel which is the largest size used just before you increase to plating. Many popular gun safe brands you see around are actually a thinner guage of steel such as 14 or 16….larger number means thiner steel. Many of these safes use a 1 inch bolt on their safe too but because the steel is thinner the wall of the safe expands when it gets crowbar attacked. I personally suggest not to get anything thinner than a 10 guage steel.

These features make the Mutual Gun Safe MS-5922 an excellant choice for a gun safe. To get a better look see MS-5922.

LaGard Audit Lock and its Compatability.

LaGard Audit locks have been around for many years now and have become one of the most reliable locks used in tracking events at a safe. It does take a computer to download the information to the lock. Which is not a problem until recently. With the new introduction of Windows Vista however, things have changed. And the software that is loaded on the computer is not compatible with Windows Vista. It is compatible with EVERYTHING else in the industry.

The AuditGard is a multi-user electronic combination lock that provides superior access control. The lock can be programmed with a Controller, a Manager and eight Users. The AuditGard has a 512 event audit with time and date stamp. Other programmable features include Dual Token (eKey or eKey II), Dual Combination, Time Delay, Time Delay Override (User 9), Silent Alarm, and Remote Signal Override to disable the lock. The AuditGard electronic lock series was designed to increase accountability in the commercial safe market.

The Windows™ based LG-Audit Setup Software has a user-friendly interface, which allows the lock to be configured directly from a PC. Software features include the ability to vary combination lengths, user activation, lock mode selection, external signal mode selection (used with the 2789 and 4002 alarm boxes) and the setting of time delay values. The LG-View Auditing Software is an essential tool for loss prevention, featuring a searchable audit trail with time and date stamp which provides knowledge of who accessed the lock and when.

Lets talk about the SB-06c from Cobalt Safes. Fireproof Safe. Burglary Safe. One of the largest in this section! Cobalt Safes model SB-06c Fireproof Safe with Burglary Safe. Has a lifetime fire warrenty and a 5 year warrenty against manufactures defects in labor and materials. This is an extremely good warrenty in that most manufactures will cover similar but Cobalt Safes goes the extra mile and sends a locksmith to your location to repair. Most manufactures are also only 1 year in coverage. With that being said. Keypads are an upgrade and are only warrentied for 1 year. (for more information on keypads vs dials see my article… Keypads vs Dials.

Back to the SB-06c. First take a look at the door, you will see that it is open. There are two major parts, an outer door and then a bolt assembly behind it. This gives it a solid 5 inch thick door on the Cobalt Safe SB-06c. Take into consideration that when the average thief breaking into the average home. He is coming into the house with empty hands and wants to leave with them full. Chances of him bringing tools such as a crowbar or sledge hammers are not the norm. If he does find the safe he will most likely be too unprepared to even beat on it and will quickly move to everything else we leave available in our homes that is easy to pocket and easy to pawn. For most of us its a pretty big list.

Lets pretend we left a crow bar and sledge hammer next to our safe and a small sticky note that says “beat me” on the safe. The SB-06c fireproof safe is going to hold up. The outer steel wall, which is an extreme thickness of about 1/8 inch steel is reinforced by a cement based fireproof wall with another steel wall on the interior. This makes for excellant strength against common tools.

The 5 inch thick door is also too thick to get a crow bar down deep enough to actually gain enough purchase to even begin to start using a crow bar on the door. So in my opinion the SB-06c Fire Safe is one of the best buys on the market today.

Combine this with a 2 hour fireproof and a center bolt down (so the safe can’t picked up and carried away) for a sturdy little fortress of protection. Not that someone is going to carry away a 1000 lbs safe!

I also like the size. Though it may be too large for most home situations it does offer good room to grow into. The last thing most of want to do is purchase two safes. I often advise to purchase 1 during your life. But make it something you can grow into because this safe is designed to last a lifetime. Last little note, as we get older, people hate to bend down or squat down. This model is excellant to stand in front of an open without having to bend over. See more details our Cobalt Safe SB-06c.

Burglary Safe. One of the largest in this section! Cobalt Safes model SB-05c Fireproof Safe with Burglary Safe.
